Renaissance Marquis resident Carl Honecker’s story is one of craftsmanship, curiosity and quiet dedication. Born on January 25, 1936, in the small town of Mountainside, New Jersey, Carl grew up as the youngest of four children in a lively household where family ties and the smell of fresh-cut lumber seemed to fill the air. His father, Hermann, was a master carpenter who built houses from the ground up—a skill he patiently shared with his sons on weekends and throughout long summer days.

Those early lessons in plumbing, electricity and woodworking gave Carl a foundation of practical knowledge and resourcefulness that would shape the rest of his life. After graduating from Jonathan Dayton Regional High School, Carl’s curiosity and determination led him to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, where he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1957.

Carl’s career took him to the heart of New York City as a project manager for J.O. Ross Engineering, and later as engineering manager at Kleissler Company. He even returned to his home state, lending his expertise as a consultant for the State of New Jersey. Along the way, he served his country in the U.S. Navy, attending Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Stationed in Yokosuka, Japan and living in Negishi Heights, Carl led a unit responsible for target drone services for the 7th Fleet—a role that required steady leadership and precise attention to detail.

But the work that may have meant the most to Carl is the work he did for family. Throughout his life, he found joy in woodworking, furniture refinishing, and crafting handmade dollhouses, tiny tables, and toys for his four children, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Each piece was more than a project; it was a gift, a way of connecting generations and passing down the tradition of creating something lasting with your own hands.

Since arriving at Renaissance Marquis in April 2024, Carl’s warmth and his quietly generous spirit have become part of the community’s fabric. His story—one built on skill, service and a love for family—continues to inspire those around him, reminding us all of the value in building, fixing and crafting a life filled with care.

A Legacy of Care: Honoring Nurturing Hearts This Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a time to recognize the steady, often quiet work of caring for others. For many, mothers are the first example of what it means to nurture. They notice what others need, offer support without being asked, and create a sense of stability that carries through every stage of life. Their care is not defined by grand gestures but by consistency, attentiveness, and a deep sense of responsibility for others' well-being.

That same spirit of care can be seen in those who choose to serve as caregivers. While their roles may look different, the foundation is much the same. Each caregiver at Renaissance Marquis Retirement Village pays attention to the small details, offers patience when it is needed, and provides support in ways that preserve dignity and comfort. Like mothers, they often step in quietly, meeting needs before they are spoken, creating an environment where others feel safe and valued.

There is also a shared understanding that care is not one-size-fits-all. Both mothers and caregivers learn to adapt, responding to changing needs over time. They balance practical responsibilities with emotional awareness, recognizing that true care involves both. Whether it is offering encouragement, providing reassurance, or simply being present, their work reflects a commitment that goes beyond routine tasks.

In many cases, these two roles meet in a meaningful way. Caregivers often find themselves supporting the very mothers who once spent their lives caring for others. There is a sense of continuity in that exchange, where the same qualities that defined one generation are now reflected in another. It is not a replacement, but a continuation of the same spirit of compassion and attentiveness.

This Mother’s Day and National Nurses Week, it is worth recognizing that nurturing is not limited to a single role or a single season of life. It is a quality that manifests in many forms, carried by those willing to give their time, attention, and care to others. Whether in a family or within a senior living community, that shared commitment creates environments that embody the spirit of motherhood, where people feel supported, respected, and truly cared for.

Renaissance Marquis resident Laura Grace Williams Frederick was born on January 19, 1938, in Polk County, Georgia, on her grandparents’ farm just outside Aragon. As an only child, Laura spent her early years surrounded by fields and the simple joys of farm life, often in the company of dogs, cats, and all sorts of barnyard animals. With her parents working, it was her grandparents who filled her days with warmth and care, and her animal friends who provided endless companionship.

Laura’s early education began at Aragon Elementary School, and she graduated from Rockmart High School in 1956 with honors. Driven by a passion for learning and a love for children, she attended Tift College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Her commitment to education didn’t stop there—Laura went on to the University of Georgia to complete her Master’s Degree in Library Media Education.

She began her career in the classroom, teaching fourth grade for two years and fifth grade for three more. Her calling eventually led her to Rockmart High School, where she took on the role of Media Specialist—a position she held with dedication for the rest of her 38-year career in education. Laura retired in 1998, having touched countless lives along the way.

In 1961, at Aragon Baptist Church, Laura married Donald Frederick, Jr. Donald served in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves for about 20 years, dedicating much of his life to service. Though he has since passed and is buried at Georgia Memorial Cemetery near Canton, Georgia, his memory remains a cherished part of Laura’s story.

Laura’s interests are as varied as her travels. She has always loved reading, planting flowers, sewing, and music. Throughout her life, she had dogs and cats as beloved companions—her last cat before moving to Renaissance was named Abby, who she still misses dearly.

Community service has always been important to Laura. She enjoyed working in the Soup Kitchen at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and later at a community kitchen, sang in the choir at St. Peter’s, and found joy in creating floral arrangements for the church altar. Laura is also a proud member and past Regent of the Xavier Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Since her retirement, Laura has truly embraced adventure. Her travels have taken her on cruises along the Danube, the Snake and Columbia Rivers, the Mississippi, the Great Lakes, Chesapeake Bay, and north to Canada. She’s explored destinations as far-flung as Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, St. Petersburg (Russia), and Iceland, as well as many countries across Europe including England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, and other Mediterranean countries.

Laura has called Rome, Georgia, home since 1978. She joined the Renaissance family nearly a year and a half ago, and we are so glad she did. Her warmth, curiosity, and generous spirit make her a cherished member of our community—and after a life so rich in stories, we’re grateful to have her share them with us.

Born on January 2, 1949, at McCall Hospital, June Scoggins has spent most of her life in Rome, Georgia. She was the first grandchild on both sides of her family—a role that came with plenty of love and attention. Her mother often recalled how June’s feet hardly touched the floor during her first 11 months because someone was always holding and spoiling her. From a very young age, June was surrounded by family warmth and support.

Music sparked June’s heart early on. At just 13 months, she heard the sound of her uncle playing guitar and made her way across the house to listen, marking the beginning of a lifelong love for music.

In 1955, June’s family moved to a new neighborhood, where she grew up among nearly twenty neighborhood children all close in age. Those childhood days were filled with bike rides from dawn till dusk, sharing snacks and laughter, and the simple joys of outdoor play.

Education was a cornerstone of June’s life. She attended Floyd County Schools and Pepperell before pursuing higher education at Berry College, West Georgia, and the University of Alabama. Her career spanned 39 years in education, where she taught, served as an administrator, counselor, and coach, shaping countless lives along the way.

Though June never married or had children of her own, family remains central to her life. She cherishes her close relationship with her sister, brother-in-law, their children, and grandchildren. A lifelong passion for missions has carried June across the globe. Inspired by stories of missionaries from her childhood involvement in Sun Beams and GA’s, she eventually experienced mission work firsthand in the 1990s. She has traveled on mission trips both within the U.S. and internationally, embracing the belief that love transcends language and cultural barriers. For June, mission trips are not just travel—they’re a calling, more meaningful than any vacation.

           Resident Spotlight: Hugh Ware

Ask Renaissance Marquis resident Hugh Ware about his childhood, and his eyes light up with the memories of Lindale, Georgia—the mill village where he was born on July 17, 1938, and where he learned the value of family and community. The middle of three boys, Hugh grew up alongside his brothers Dan and Bud, under the caring guidance of their parents, Bonnie and Richard. Days in Lindale were simple but rich: time with family, friendships forged in the neighborhood, and a sense of belonging that never left him.

Hugh’s school years were spent at Pepperell Schools, where he graduated before heading to West Georgia in Carrolton for further studies. Eventually, he found his way back home to Rome, enrolling at Shorter College—a decision that grounded him even more deeply in the region he loves.

Hard work runs in Hugh’s blood. He first put in about five years at the Lindale Mill, then dedicated an impressive 37 years to the local paper mill. Along the way, he built a life with Phyllis—the love of his life and his partner in all things. They married on July 1, 1960, at Lindale Methodist Church. “We’re both good ole’ Methodists and we love our ole’ church!” they say with a smile, a testament to their shared faith and sense of humor.

Family has always been at the heart of Hugh’s world. He and Phyllis are the proud parents of two sons, Steve and Jim—both of whom followed in their father’s footsteps to work at the paper mill. The family grew to include two beloved daughters-in-law, Pam and Amber, and an energetic crew of grandchildren and great-grandchildren: four granddaughters, two grandsons, and seven great-grandchildren in all. Hugh’s eyes light up when he talks about them, each story a reminder of the legacy he’s helped create.

Sports have always been a big part of Hugh’s life—especially cheering on Georgia Tech and the Atlanta Braves. He loved volunteering with the Boy Scouts when his boys were members, always happiest when he could lend a hand or be part of something bigger than himself.

Since moving to Renaissance with Phyllis three years ago, Hugh has found new joys. He’s a regular with Marquis Melodies, singing his heart out, and he never misses a chance to join friends for lunch outings. “We love it here!” he and Phyllis say, their gratitude and warmth unmistakable. For Hugh, community and connection remain at the center of a life well-lived—and we’re grateful to have him as part of our family.

Social connection plays a powerful role in protecting mental and emotional well-being as we age, yet it is often one of the first things to fade when seniors live alone. Changes in health, mobility or daily routine can make it harder to stay socially engaged, leading many older adults to experience isolation without realizing it. Moving into a senior living community like Renaissance Marquis can be a meaningful step toward restoring connection, purpose and a sense of belonging as well as a means to keeping the mind sharp.

One of the greatest benefits of senior living is the built-in opportunity for daily interaction. Instead of relying on occasional visits or scheduled outings, residents are surrounded by peers and team members who become part of everyday life. Shared meals, group activities and casual conversations create natural moments of connection that help seniors feel less alone and more emotionally supported. Friendships formed often become deep and meaningful, offering comfort during both joyful and challenging moments.

Social engagement also supports mental sharpness and emotional resilience. Renaissance Marquis offers structured programs such as musical events, games, classes and creative activities that encourage conversation and learning. These experiences help keep the mind active while providing excitement for the days ahead. For many seniors, having something to look forward to each day makes a meaningful difference in overall outlook.

For families, choosing senior living can bring peace of mind. Knowing a loved one is socially connected and emotionally supported eases concerns about loneliness and isolation. Families often notice positive changes after a move, including improved mood, increased engagement and a renewed sense of joy in their loved one’s daily life.

Ultimately, moving into a senior living community is not about giving something up. It is about gaining connection, companionship and support. By prioritizing social interaction and meaningful relationships, Renaissance Marquis helps seniors protect their mental and emotional health while enjoying a fuller, more connected way of life.

After the busy holiday season, many seniors notice changes in energy levels, mobility or comfort, making the New Year a natural time for families to pause and consider what support will help their loved ones feel their best. New Year care focuses on thoughtful steps that nurture independence, confidence and quality of life throughout the year. For some seniors who may be feeling the effects of aging, a senior living community that emphasizes whole-person wellness, such as Renaissance Marquis, can offer the right balance of support, connection and peace of mind for both residents and families.

One important part of New Year care is access to therapy services that help seniors maintain strength, balance and independence. Physical and occupational therapy can play a key role in improving mobility, supporting recovery and enhancing daily routines. At Renaissance, therapy services are coordinated with care teams, making it easier for residents to participate consistently and work toward goals that support long-term wellness.

Pain management is another essential focus as seniors begin the year. Chronic pain can affect more than just physical comfort; it can also impact mood, sleep and overall quality of life. Senior living communities take a comprehensive approach to pain management, combining medical oversight, therapy, movement and comfort-focused strategies. This collaborative care helps ensure concerns are addressed early, allowing residents to remain engaged and comfortable in their daily lives.

Staying active is a powerful way for seniors to support both physical and emotional well-being. Regular movement helps maintain flexibility, strength and balance while also encouraging social connection. At Renaissance Marquis, residents have access to a variety of opportunities to stay active, from gentle exercise classes and walking groups to wellness programs designed to meet residents where they are. These activities are thoughtfully structured to be safe, enjoyable and empowering.

Equally important to physical care is the social connection that supports mental and emotional wellbeing. Renaissance offers daily opportunities for meaningful interaction, whether through shared meals, group activities, creative programs or simple conversations with neighbors and team members who truly know each resident. These moments of connection help reduce feelings of isolation, encourage a sense of belonging and bring joy to everyday life.

For families, knowing a loved one is supported by a compassionate team that prioritizes therapy, pain management and active living can provide lasting peace of mind. By focusing on whole-person wellness, Renaissance Marquis help residents begin the year feeling supported, capable and connected, creating a strong foundation for health and happiness in the months ahead.

Renaissance Marquis resident Helen Lloyd was born on May 25, 1937, to Howard and Omer Blalock in Paulding County, Georgia. She grew up as the fourth of eight children—part of a lively family of four girls and four boys. When Helen was three, the Blalocks moved to Floyd County, living in Silver Creek until she was 14, and then setting down new roots in Lindale.

Helen attended Harmony School from first through eighth grade, followed by Pepperell High School, where she graduated with the class of 1956. During her high school years, Helen worked at McClellan’s 5 & 10 Cent Store on Broad Street—a classic “five and dime” right in the heart of Rome. Shortly after graduation, she landed a job at a finance company in downtown Rome before starting a long and meaningful career at Inland Container Corporation in the Coosa community. Helen served as a Customer Service Representative there from 1960 until her retirement in 1999, earning the respect and affection of coworkers and customers alike.

Helen’s story is also one of lasting love. She and Jodie (Joe) Pitts married on March 31, 1956, spending 46 years together until his passing in March 2002. In August 2007, Helen found love and companionship again with James (Jimmy) Lloyd, sharing 18 happy years until his passing in June 2025.

Helen is the proud mother of two daughters: Jo Marie Amos (James) and Allison Cook (Robby). Her family circle also includes grandchildren Justin Amos (Keely), Cody Amos (Emily), Carson Cook, and Rylee Cook Barackman (Michael). She is blessed with three great-grandchildren: Declan Amos, Tenley Amos, and Charlotte Amos.

A woman of faith, Helen is an active member of Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church in Silver Creek. In her free time, she enjoys sitting outside in the sunshine, watching Atlanta Braves baseball and University of Georgia Bulldogs football on TV, and—most of all—spending precious time with her family.

Helen became a resident at Renaissance Marquis in February 2024 and has been part of our community for nearly two years. She looks forward to Friday visits to the ice cream shop and enjoys the Thursday coffee bar with friends. She especially appreciates hearing the First Baptist Lindale Senior Adult Choir and watching the Dixie Stompers perform. When asked what she likes most about Renaissance Marquis, Helen is quick to mention the friendliness of the residents and the caring, helpful staff.

Katherine Gail Lane has always called Rome, Georgia, home. Born on the very last day of 1944, she entered the world alongside her twin sister, Dale. The two were partners in crime from the beginning, with their younger sister Elaine trailing close behind. Rome wasn’t just a place on the map—it was where Gail learned the rhythms of small-town life, walking the halls of East 10th School and later, Model High, where she collected her diploma in 1963.

After graduation, Gail set her sights on a career in hairdressing. She signed on at a local shop, training under the watchful eye of its owner. For two years, she washed, snipped, and styled, learning the trade hands-on until she earned her license. Even then she stuck around, putting in three more years. There seemed to be no better way to learn than watching regulars come and go, each with their own stories to tell. Eventually, she spread her wings, moving on to new shops and new customers.

Marriage took her away from her hometown for six years—just long enough to realize that Rome was always where her heart lived. When she returned, she settled into her role as a hairdresser once again and poured herself into her work. For the next quarter-century, she brought a little confidence and maybe a little sparkle to everyone with a seat in her chair. Ten of those years she ran her own salon, steering her own small business with care.

By 1985, Gail was ready for a change. She stepped out of the salon and into the world of retail. After a few years, her path led to Murphy Harpst Children’s Center, where she found an entirely new way to make a difference. That chapter lasted until 2013—the end of a remarkable 50-year working life.

Her personal life, too, was filled with chapters and characters. Her first husband served in the military, and together they returned to Rome after he retired. Their marriage lasted eight and a half years before ending in 1978. Just a year later, she married Ed, a Navy man who would be her companion for three decades. With Ed came a new family—four stepchildren, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren as the years went by. They went fishing and took drives to the mountains, always savoring time together until Ed’s passing in 2009.

Gail’s home was rarely quiet. She filled it with music—country, her favorite—and the soft chime of old movies and mysteries. She painted ceramics, crocheted, and brought old furniture back to life. Outdoors, she loved the simple delight of planting flowers and watching them thrive. Animals were always part of Gail’s life, but her heart belonged to King, her loyal dog, and a regal Himalayan cat who stayed by her side for 17 years.

Now, after a year at Renaissance Marquis, Gail is woven into the fabric of her new community. She looks forward to daily gatherings and group lunches with friends—each meal packed with shared laughter and good conversation. She’s made a habit of joining in almost every activity offered, always curious, always open to new company.

At every stage, Katherine Gail Lane has rooted herself in the things and people she loves most, building a life full of stories and memories, all with Rome, Georgia, at the center.

Caring for Seniors During the Holidays: Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Make the Move

The holiday season is often filled with family gatherings, joyful traditions and meaningful moments—but for many families caring for an aging loved one, it can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. As routines change and days get busier, meeting the needs of aging parents or grandparents can become more complex, leaving family caregivers feeling stretched thin. While many families consider senior living as a helpful next step, they often hesitate to make the transition before the holidays. Common concerns include the fear that a loved one will feel lonely or abandoned, the worry it will disrupt the season and family traditions, or bring judgment from family and friends. But for many families, waiting may actually increase stress for both seniors and caregivers rather than ease it.

In reality, moving into a senior living community before the holidays can be one of the most supportive decisions a family can make. At Renaissance Marquis, the holidays are filled with festive events, warm social connections and compassionate team members who help residents feel at home quickly. Rather than spending the season stressed and exhausted, families can share more meaningful, quality time together—free from the pressures of caregiving tasks and safety concerns. Renaissance Marquis encourages visits, whether it is at their community or at home for Christmas dinner. Instead of a disruption, the move often brings relief, stability and more joy to everyone involved.

The holidays can also highlight areas where a senior needs additional support: increased confusion in busy environments, difficulty navigating crowded gatherings and challenges with mobility often become more noticeable this time of year. Renaissance Marquis is trained to meet these needs in a way that keeps the season enjoyable. For those with limited mobility, communities offer accessible events, transportation assistance, and safe, thoughtfully designed spaces—ensuring seniors can still participate in the traditions they love. For residents living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, structured activities, sensory-friendly celebrations and predictable daily routines help prevent overstimulation and confusion. These specialized supports help families worry less and give seniors a safer, more comfortable holiday environment.

Christmas-time is already hectic, and many caregivers are already juggling managing medications, preparing meals, assisting with personal care and coordinating doctor’s visits. By moving a loved one into a community before the holiday rush, caregivers gain the gift of rest. Rather than carrying the full weight alone, they can rely on a team of trained professionals who are available around the clock. This relief allows caregivers to enjoy holiday moments more fully—sharing stories over dinner, watching favorite movies together or simply being present without the pressure of caregiving.

It’s also important to remember that the transition into senior living doesn’t erase family traditions—it often enhances them. Families can decorate their loved one’s new apartment together, bring treasured holiday recipes to share or join community events designed to include residents and their families. If your family has been considering senior living but putting it off until the new year, this season may actually be the perfect time to make the move. With compassionate care, festive community life and support tailored to each resident’s needs, Renaissance Marquis can help bring peace, comfort and joy to your loved one and to you.

When you sit down with Betty Wright, it doesn’t take long to feel at ease. She has a gentle way of bringing people in, from her earliest days on a farm in Salinas, California, to her warm welcome today at Renaissance.

Born on February 2, 1950, Betty grew up surrounded by fields and family. Her older sister still lives back in Salinas, a place rich with memories for Betty. Summers were spent alongside her parents, dad, and grandpa, helping in the orchard and tending to cows—a season of life that sparked her lasting love of nature, animals, and simple joys.

Betty graduated from North Salinas High in 1969, and earned her Associate’s in Business from Hartnell Junior College. She worked a variety of jobs around Salinas—department store associate, produce secretary, drug store clerk—always with a readiness to lend a hand.

Her sense of adventure and devotion led her next to Moselle, Mississippi, where she worked at a drug store and then Methodist Hospital, rising from unit clerk to running the business office. In Alabama, she and her husband Ron embraced small-town life, running a mom-and-pop restaurant. Everything changed in 1984, when their son Robert entered their lives through adoption; Betty became a stay-at-home mom and managed their farm, home to cows, pigs, goats, dogs, and cats.

Family has always come first for Betty. She and Ron—her sweetheart, best friend and husband of 54 years—built their story together across Mississippi, Alabama, and finally Georgia, where they found their “forever home.” Their family grew again with the arrival of granddaughter Ruby, now twelve, and Betty treasures every chapter.

Creativity and community remain central in Betty’s life: she loves reading, painting, and TV, and takes special pride in being a Rodeph Shalom Sisterhood member here in Rome. Years ago, she was a “bluebird”—a detail she shares with a fond smile.

A part of the Renaissance Marquis Retirement Community for almost a year now, Betty is known for greeting new residents and families, helping everyone feel truly welcome. Alongside Ron and their beloved black kitten Ebony (rescued right here in the courtyard), Betty enjoys games of bingo and moments of laughter with friends old and new.

When you meet Betty, you sense her open heart—anchored in family, enriched by friendship, and lifted by the simple gestures that make a place feel like home. We are grateful to have Betty, Ron, and Ebony as part of the Renaissance family, brightening our days and weaving new memories every step of the way.

Viking Pure installs on-site systems that generate powerful cleaning and disinfecting solutions using only salt, water, and electricity. This process creates electrolyzed water: a safe, fragrance-free, and highly effective alternative to conventional chemicals.

Behind the maps dotted with colorful push-pins in Frances’ Renaissance Marquis apartment lies a story that stretches far beyond the borders of Georgia. Born on January 23, 1926, in the small community of Carlton, Frances grew up during the Great Depression, an only child surrounded by a lively crowd of cousins in Madison County. Even in those early years, she was drawn to learning and adventure.

Her path led first to Anderson College in South Carolina, then to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where she earned her degree in Home Economics. While Frances was studying in Tennessee, her childhood sweetheart, Bill, was at Emory University—until World War II interrupted his education and sent him to serve in Japan. When Bill returned home, their story picked up right where it left off. They married in 1947 and soon settled in Elberton, Georgia, where they would spend decades building a life that was equal parts love, partnership, and community service.

Frances and Bill became pillars of Elberton, dedicating themselves to the Elberton Granite Association and helping put their region’s granite on the map, both nationally and internationally. Their family grew to include two daughters, Janet and Fran, as well as two grandsons and four great-grandchildren—each one a new chapter in their ongoing adventure.

But it wasn’t just professional success or family ties that defined Frances and Bill; it was their shared spirit of discovery. They made a promise to their younger grandson: together, they would visit all fifty states and their capitals before he graduated high school—a promise they fulfilled in 2002. Their travels didn’t stop at America’s borders. Frances and Bill explored Europe, Australia, and Scandinavia, and even rode camels beneath the shadow of Egypt’s Great Pyramids. As part of a Bicentennial project, they visited and documented the graves of every signer of the U.S. Constitution, determined that each would be properly remembered.

Each journey added a new pin to Frances’s maps and a new treasure to her ever-growing collection of cat figurines and jewelry—a whimsical reminder of the places she’s seen and the memories she’s made. Even after Bill’s passing in 2014, Frances continued to live with the same joyful curiosity and drive that had carried her across continents.

Now, at Renaissance Marquis, Frances is very much at home. She’s a familiar face at BINGO, always ready for a spirited Butterbean Auction, and takes pride in having named the Marquis Melodies program. Her days are filled with crossword puzzles, word finds, and Sudoku, as she keeps up with the news, her family, and her beloved Tennessee Volunteers.

Step into Frances’s apartment and you’ll see her life mapped out in vibrant detail—every push-pin a story, every cat a memory, every day a new adventure. From a small town in Georgia to the far corners of the world, Frances continues to show that a life well-lived is one marked by curiosity, kindness, and a boundless sense of wonder.

If you catch a flash of blue eyes and a smile that lights up the room, you’ve probably just met Johnnie Wise. Born on a crisp January day in 1938, Johnnie grew up surrounded by the rolling hills of Walland, a small, close-knit community in Blount County, Tennessee. Her parents, Bea and Odell Burns, filled their home with warmth and laughter, and Johnnie shared childhood adventures with her brother, who now lives in nearby Maryville.

After graduating from Walland High School, Johnnie dove straight into the world of sales and retail management—a career that suited her genuine nature and easy conversation style. She married right out of high school and welcomed a son, and later found love again with Walter Wise, a proud military man.

Though she doesn’t have grandchildren (yet!), Johnnie’s family includes Sadie Mae, her devoted little companion who’s never far from her side here at Renaissance Marquis. You’ll often spot the two of them together—Sadie Mae’s tail wagging, Johnnie’s eyes twinkling as she says hello to neighbors.

In quieter moments, Johnnie once loved to cross-stitch, creating delicate patterns that spoke to her patience and attention to detail. These days, she’s a regular at Bingo and can often be found in the Bird Lobby, catching up with friends amid the gentle chatter and flutter of wings.

Sylvia Hine has a way of making people feel at home. Even if you’ve only just met her, there’s a warmth in her smile and a gentle spirit that puts you at ease. In her year at Renaissance Marquis, she’s become a cherished presence—one of those rare souls who quietly brighten the world around them.

Sylvia’s journey began in Gadsden, Alabama, in the autumn of 1936. She grew up with her sister and loving parents, learning early on the importance of family and kindness. When her family moved to Rome, Georgia, Sylvia found herself in high school, stepping into a new chapter that would change everything. That’s where she met John Hine, the boy who would become her lifelong partner.

They married at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rome, beginning a life together that would span an incredible 67 years. Atlanta became their home, with John pursuing his studies at Georgia Tech and Sylvia working as an office assistant. Through it all, their marriage was built on love, laughter, and the kind of steady devotion that makes the hard times easier and the good times even sweeter.

Sylvia’s greatest pride has always been her family. She’s the mother of three, grandmother to seven, and great-grandmother to one. Her children remember a childhood filled with magic—little moments made special by Sylvia’s caring presence. To those who know her, she’s more than just kind; she’s the heartbeat of her family, the one you turn to for comfort, wisdom, and a sense that everything will be okay.

Beyond her family, Sylvia has always brought energy and joy into her days. She played weekly tennis, loved a good game of bridge, and was famous among friends for her daily three-mile walks. Her passion for staying active and connected is just another way she’s inspired those around her to live fully.

Rome, Georgia, has always been home for this remarkable resident, except for a few short stints in Augusta and Milledgeville, Georgia, Franklin, North Carolina, and Miami, Florida. Her family roots run deep—from Virginia down through the heart of the South—and her curiosity about those roots led her on a journey of discovery after surgery, when she delved into her heritage through Ancestry.com. What she found amazed her: Patriot ancestors who fought for liberty, Scottish and English forebears, South Carolina sharecroppers and the elite, and even hints of a connection to the Mayflower. Her family’s story, chronicled in “My Tucker Kin,” includes the testimony of her fourth great-grandmother, who managed to avoid the Trail of Tears with her Cherokee people. Her maternal grandmother, Eva, also passed down stories of hardship and survival among the Choctaw.

She met her high school sweetheart, Tom Seckinger, through their fathers, who became friends while bird hunting. She and Tom recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary—on June 6th, the same date both sets of parents were married. Tom’s family moved from Atlanta when his father took a job at Plant Hammond with Georgia Power, beginning a tradition that continues with their son, Brad, now a fourth-generation employee. Family has always been at the center of her life: she and Tom have four children—Austin, Anita, Amanda, and Brad—nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, who are their pride and joy.

Faith and community have shaped her days. She and Tom were active in their church, their children’s schools, and any community event that called for a helping hand. They never met a stranger and shared a love of antiques and vintage treasures, traveling to “pick” at sales across the South. Their adventures included working the Longest Yard Sale in Mentone, Alabama, and two appearances on the TV show Antiques Roadshow. For 25 years, they’ve run booths at local antique shops, connecting with fellow history lovers along the way.

Her interests are wide-ranging: she’s drawn house plans and built two homes, organized church events and parties, traveled with her children on mission trips, and enjoyed camping and gardening. Playing in the dirt—whether with flowers or vegetables—has always been a kind of therapy. She’s also a writer of childhood memories and a supporter to others in need. Her spiritual calling to missions led her to help establish Crisis Pregnancy of Rome in the 1970s, offering women support and encouragement to choose life.

Her professional life has been just as varied and fulfilling. She studied accounting and worked as a bookkeeper, then moved into education as a paraprofessional, lead secretary, bookkeeper, classroom manager, and instructor in keyboarding and computer skills for elementary students. She’s also worked as a long-distance operator, antique shop clerk, lawyer’s secretary, restaurant cashier, and PBX operator for Redmond Park Hospital.

Now, her greatest joy comes from caring for Tom as they navigate the challenges of aging, and from the circle of new friends she’s found at Renaissance Marquis. Her story is one of family, faith, resilience, and a life lived in service to others—a life that has touched many in Rome and beyond.

Jim McCubbin was born March 5, 1921, and he remembers a childhood full of spending time with his two sisters, playing chess and other games, reading and hanging out with friends and family. His father was a teacher and his mother a homemaker. He says his childhood was a happy one.

As a young adult, Jim attended Colombia University and graduated with an Engineering degree. He then enlisted with the Air Force during the height of World War II. He flew a fighter jet (a P-51 Mustang) called “The Mary Al,” which he still remembers fondly. Jim went on 44 missions, equating to almost 200 combat hours.

On February 19, 1945, Jim’s plane was shot down during battle after shooting down nine planes himself. Jim and his co-pilot wandered around the German countryside until they found a farmhouse where a kind woman scrounged up some sauerkraut for them to eat. “I will never forget the generosity and courage that she had,” Jim commented. They were captured by the Germans and taken to a Prisoner of War camp. For three days, Jim was held in a sweatbox until it was determined he could become an ordinary prisoner of war. He was fed soup with worms and beans, and he tried to avoid eating the worms as long as possible, but he eventually needed the protein. He was there for nearly four months until the war ended. Jim was later awarded the Purple Heart and a Distinguished Flying Cross for surviving that crash.

After the war, Jim married his wartime sweetheart, Betty Jane in March 1946. They had gone on only one date before Jim left for the war, but they kept in touch the whole time. Together they had four children, Debbie, Jack, Carleen and Ken. His family has now grown to nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, and he loves spending time with them.

Jim and Betty loved to travel together and went to at least 30 countries over the years, and every chance he got, he would fly his own plane. If he wasn’t flying or spending time with his family and friends, you may have found him visiting the zoo.

Jim went into the plastics industry, starting his own business in Kansas but eventually moving it to Mexico City. He retired at 55 and bought a farm in California, but he made his way to Cedartown to be closer to his daughter, Carleen, and her family. Jim moved into Renaissance Marquis nearly 15 years ago. He loves spending time with the friends he has made at Renaissance Marquis and telling his wartime stories.

Born in Rome, Georgia, on May 3, 1925, Jim was the beloved son of Joe and Leila Carter Holloway. He grew up on Pennington Avenue in South Rome, Georgia alongside his siblings Frances, Bob and Pat. Jim attended Rome High School and Massey Business School, which paved the way for his long and successful career at Jackson Typewriter Co., where he worked for over 40 years until his retirement.

As a Private First Class in the Army during World War II, Jim’s bravery shone through. His unit arrived at Omaha Beach for D-Day a day late due to a ship breakdown, a fortunate twist that certainly saved many of his company’s lives. During his service, he received two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, the Cross of Lorraine, a sharpshooter medal and many other commendations.

In May of 1946, Jim married Arleva V. Watson, and their love endured until her passing in 1999. Together, they raised their daughter, Marie Holloway Storey, who, along with her husband Darryl, now lives in Cedar Bluff, Alabama. Their granddaughter, Hannah Marie, resides in Birmingham. Jim and Arleva also cherished their 24 nieces and nephews, treating them as their own children. His great-grand dog, Riley “the Talking Dog,” brought additional joy to his life.

Jim’s hobbies included golf, cards, pool, fishing, hunting arrowheads and metal detecting, with fishing being his favorite. Between him and Arleva, they won over 100 golf trophies between the 1950s and 1990s. A lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Jim’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. His dear friend Frank Curti brings him communion every Wednesday morning. Jim also participated in the Rome Honor Guard, St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and volunteered with the VA.

For over three years, Jim has been a cherished resident of the Renaissance Marquis Retirement Village. He enjoys all outdoor activities, especially the fishing trips, and he takes great pleasure in the Memorial and Veteran’s Day celebrations. Jim’s dedication to his family, community and country is truly commendable. His legacy is one of service, love and passion for life.

Britni Bagwell advances to Resident Services Director at Renaissance Marquis, bringing 12+ years of experience and dedication to the role.

Rome, Ga. (April 2025) — Renaissance Marquis, a premier retirement community, is excited to announce the promotion of long-standing employee, Britni Bagwell, to Resident Services Director. Bagwell has been with Renaissance Marquis for over 12 years, starting her career off as a caregiver while she was still a senior in high school. Three years later, Bagwell was promoted to Memory Care Director where she oversaw Renaissance Marquis’ state-of-the-art memory care community, The Harbor. Bagwell served as the Memory Care Coordinator until her promotion to Resident Service Director in December 2024.

Bagwell was born in Germany while her father was in the service, but was raised in Rome, Georgia. She attended Model High School and obtained her LPN from Georgia Northwestern Technical College. After being hired at Renaissance Marquis, Bagwell immediately found her calling working with seniors. “I live to see the resident’s smile. It is so rewarding to have the opportunity to advocate for residents that are no longer able to do so themselves,” Bagwell said.

“It has been wonderful to watch Britni grow into her career at Renaissance Marquis. She has as much enthusiasm and joy as when she first started, and it has always been clear her passion for serving others. We were excited to offer her this well-earned promotion,” states Catie Mason, Executive Director of Renaissance Marquis.

Bagwell and her husband of 13 years, Trey, have three boys, Elvis, Easton and Elias, as well as a dog, Maddie. She loves being outside with her children playing and swimming. She also enjoys singing with her church choir and listening to country music.

Mason has been a part of the Renaissance Marquis team for over 12 years, starting her career at the community as a caregiver in their state-of-the-art memory care neighborhood, The Harbor.

Mason was promoted to Harbor Director in 2013, while also working to complete her LPN degree from Georgia Northwestern Technical College. As the Harbor Director, Mason oversaw the Harbor staff and managed the day-to-day care and services. In 2016, Mason was promoted to Resident Services Director, where she expanded her role into managing the clinical sectors of the independent living and assisted living neighborhoods, as well as maintaining clinical oversight of The Harbor. After completing Legacy Senior Living’s Executive Director in Training program, Mason was promoted to Assistant Executive Director in 2023.

Upon the promotion of the former Executive Director, Allen Chambers, to Director of Asset Management for the company, Mason was the ideal fit for this position. Having passed her Georgia Administrator’s licensure exam, Renaissance Marquis promoted her to Executive Director.

Mason is naturally drawn towards seniors and the treasures their stories contain. She states, “Serving in senior living is not just about providing care; it’s about honoring a lifetime of experiences, creating meaningful connections, and finding joy in the moments shared. The reward lies in the simple, yet profound, act of making someone’s day a little brighter.”

“From the moment Catie started working for us, her servant-heartedness and passion for providing the highest quality of care set her apart as a leader. It has been exciting to see Catie grow into her leadership positions, and we continue to be amazed by her hard-working spirit and love for seniors,” said Bryan Cook, Co-Founder and President of Legacy Senior Living.

Team at Renaissance Marquis receives training to better serve residents with memory-related conditions.

Rome, Ga. (Sept. 2024) — Renaissance Marquis has completed a thorough training for team members working in the memory care neighborhood, The Harbor. The specific, hands-on training equips caregivers and nurses with the necessary tools to care for residents with Alzheimer’s or Dementia in a gentle, loving and knowledgeable approach.

The extensive three-day training is led by Renita Carnes, Director of Culture and Training, who is certified by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. The course covers topics such as diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, nutrition, activities and communication. The training is designed to help Renaissance Marquis’ care team understand the inner workings of someone with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

“Caring for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia can be a daunting task at times. We want to provide the best possible care for our residents by equipping our team members with a thorough and specific training,” Renita Carnes says. “Only by understanding what these residents go through each day, can our team members be fully equipped to serve our residents with the highest quality of care.”

The training is offered to the Renaissance Marquis team every 6 months to renew certifications and train new team members. Renaissance Marquis is committed to serving the Greatest Generation with honor, respect, faith and integrity.

The bi-annual training for team members at The Harbor is just one of the many features that makes living at Renaissance Marquis unique. The Harbor utilizes a life enrichment program, “The Purposeful Day”, which was created by co-founders, Barry Ray and Bryan Cook. “The Purposeful Day” program is designed to meet the specific needs of each resident and to continue giving them purpose in their later stages of life. The Harbor was also designed with a 1950’s theme, color scheme and décor that takes residents back to a happier time in life.

Another resource for family members, team members or community partners who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia is Renaissance Marquis’ Alzheimer’s Support Services. Led by Dr. Ron Harvard, this complimentary resource is designed to give support to families and caregivers who are navigating the pressures of caring for a loved one with memory loss.

With degrees in Biblical Studies, Social Psychology, and Pastoral Counseling, Dr. Harvard’s love for teaching and counseling have defined his life, but no more so than the love of his life, Linda, and their four children.

Dr. Harvard’s introduction to Alzheimer’s was personal and very painful. In the fall of 2003, Dr. Harvard recognized the beginning signs of memory loss in his late wife, Linda. Fifteen years later, Linda became a resident of a Legacy Senior Living community, The Harbor at Legacy Village of Cleveland. In May of 2023, Linda passed away. Dr. Harvard chronicled his struggles and victories in his blog, “Dementia: walking victoriously through the ‘Long Goodbye,’” offering lessons learned, meditations, and comfort to many.

My mission in leading this new Alzheimer’s Support Service is to provide behavioral insights, practical direction and comfort through support groups and one-on-one meetings,” said Dr. Harvard.

(ROME, Ga.) — Renaissance Marquis senior living community will honor its five World War II residents in a ceremony on June 1st, including James McCubbin, a 101-year old Air Force pilot and prisoner of war.

The ceremony, at Richard B. Russell Airport in Rome, will include a fly-in by the Commemorative Air Force along with a P51 Mustang World War II era airplane, just for McCubbin. If he chooses, volunteers from the Rome Fire Department will help McCubbin up into the plane for another flight.

“James often talks of his time in the Air Force and of his memories in the cockpit of the P51 Mustang,” said Catie Mason, LPN, Resident Services Director at Renaissance Marquis. “These memories mean a lot to him. We wanted to honor him and also to give him the opportunity to see a P51 Mustang again. We are thankful to the Commemorative Air Force for making this happen for him and to the Rome Fire Department for providing support to help him into the plane if he wants. This ceremony means so much to us and will mean so much to James as well.”

Now 101-years old, McCubbin still fondly recalls the feeling that he had while sitting in the cockpit of his P51 Mustang.

“The long-awaited radio call, ‘Gentlemen start your engines!’ The memory of emotions at that moment, even after these fifty years, is still strong enough to bring tears to my eyes,” said McCubbin. “The thrill of 50 Rolls Royce, 12-cylinder, 1600 horsepower engines, coughing and struggling to catch enough fuel to start. The first deep throated roar as one caught, quickly reinforced by an ever-increasing thunder until the whole field shook and vibrated. These feelings never diminished, even after 44 missions, which equated to almost 200 combat hours.”
