Resident Spotlight: Gene Mitchell
Gene Mitchell was born on June 2, 1934, in Cave Spring, Georgia, where his story began in a small house surrounded by fields and family. Childhood was noisy and bright with the company of his two brothers and two sisters, all growing up together in the Rehoboth area. School days started at Cave Spring Elementary and later shifted to Floyd County, where Gene walked the halls of Rome High School and graduated, ready to step into the world.
Work came early and became a steady rhythm in Gene’s life. He spent years at Ivan Allen Office Supply, learning the value of showing up and doing every job well, before joining Bekaert Corporation. There, Gene would finish his career and eventually retire—a quiet testament to his reliability, his steady hands, and the trust he inspired in others.
Service was always a calling. In 1956, Gene answered that call, spending three years in the Army. Stationed first in Norfolk, Virginia, then in El Paso, Texas, for nine months, he learned discipline, patience, and the kind of camaraderie that leaves a mark long after the uniform comes off. Those years shaped him, and their lessons lingered, carried home to Georgia.
The center of Gene’s world is his marriage to Jane, his companion and best friend for 58 years. They have built a life together—one filled with laughter, shared burdens, and simple joys. For over five decades, their home was in Adairsville, where they raised four children: Angela Trammell, Allison Knight, Chris Mitchell, and Kevin Mitchell. With time, their family blossomed further, welcoming 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, each one a new chapter of pride and happiness.
Gene’s days have always been filled with activity. He played golf and softball, tossed beanbags in friendly games of corn hole, and cheered for the Atlanta Braves as faithfully as he tended to his own yard. Happiest outdoors, he loved yard sales, searching for treasures under the open sky, and found peace working outside, hands in the earth. Faith is a constant, too—Gene is an active member of Sherwood Church, anchored by his beliefs and the friendships he’s found there.
For nearly two years, Gene and Jane have made their home at Renaissance Marquis. Around here, he’s a fixture at Bingo, where his good humor and quick smile brighten any gathering. Gene’s warmth and kindness bring people together, making every event feel a little more welcoming and every day a little brighter.
Ask anyone at Renaissance, and they’ll tell you: Gene Mitchell brings out the best in people. His story is one of family, service, and finding joy in the everyday. Through every season, he’s shown what it means to live with steadfast love and a quiet, everyday grace.
