Resident Spotlight: Hugh Ware
Ask Renaissance Marquis resident Hugh Ware about his childhood, and his eyes light up with the memories of Lindale, Georgia—the mill village where he was born on July 17, 1938, and where he learned the value of family and community. The middle of three boys, Hugh grew up alongside his brothers Dan and Bud, under the caring guidance of their parents, Bonnie and Richard. Days in Lindale were simple but rich: time with family, friendships forged in the neighborhood, and a sense of belonging that never left him.
Hugh’s school years were spent at Pepperell Schools, where he graduated before heading to West Georgia in Carrolton for further studies. Eventually, he found his way back home to Rome, enrolling at Shorter College—a decision that grounded him even more deeply in the region he loves.
Hard work runs in Hugh’s blood. He first put in about five years at the Lindale Mill, then dedicated an impressive 37 years to the local paper mill. Along the way, he built a life with Phyllis—the love of his life and his partner in all things. They married on July 1, 1960, at Lindale Methodist Church. “We’re both good ole’ Methodists and we love our ole’ church!” they say with a smile, a testament to their shared faith and sense of humor.
Family has always been at the heart of Hugh’s world. He and Phyllis are the proud parents of two sons, Steve and Jim—both of whom followed in their father’s footsteps to work at the paper mill. The family grew to include two beloved daughters-in-law, Pam and Amber, and an energetic crew of grandchildren and great-grandchildren: four granddaughters, two grandsons, and seven great-grandchildren in all. Hugh’s eyes light up when he talks about them, each story a reminder of the legacy he’s helped create.
Sports have always been a big part of Hugh’s life—especially cheering on Georgia Tech and the Atlanta Braves. He loved volunteering with the Boy Scouts when his boys were members, always happiest when he could lend a hand or be part of something bigger than himself.
Since moving to Renaissance with Phyllis three years ago, Hugh has found new joys. He’s a regular with Marquis Melodies, singing his heart out, and he never misses a chance to join friends for lunch outings. “We love it here!” he and Phyllis say, their gratitude and warmth unmistakable. For Hugh, community and connection remain at the center of a life well-lived—and we’re grateful to have him as part of our family.
