Resident Spotlight: Sylvia Hine

Sylvia Hine has a way of making people feel at home. Even if you’ve only just met her, there’s a warmth in her smile and a gentle spirit that puts you at ease. In her year at Renaissance Marquis, she’s become a cherished presence—one of those rare souls who quietly brighten the world around them.

Sylvia’s journey began in Gadsden, Alabama, in the autumn of 1936. She grew up with her sister and loving parents, learning early on the importance of family and kindness. When her family moved to Rome, Georgia, Sylvia found herself in high school, stepping into a new chapter that would change everything. That’s where she met John Hine, the boy who would become her lifelong partner.

They married at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rome, beginning a life together that would span an incredible 67 years. Atlanta became their home, with John pursuing his studies at Georgia Tech and Sylvia working as an office assistant. Through it all, their marriage was built on love, laughter, and the kind of steady devotion that makes the hard times easier and the good times even sweeter.

Sylvia’s greatest pride has always been her family. She’s the mother of three, grandmother to seven, and great-grandmother to one. Her children remember a childhood filled with magic—little moments made special by Sylvia’s caring presence. To those who know her, she’s more than just kind; she’s the heartbeat of her family, the one you turn to for comfort, wisdom, and a sense that everything will be okay.

Beyond her family, Sylvia has always brought energy and joy into her days. She played weekly tennis, loved a good game of bridge, and was famous among friends for her daily three-mile walks. Her passion for staying active and connected is just another way she’s inspired those around her to live fully.
